Dr. Felgner is the Director of the recently established Center for Vaccine Research and Development (vaccine. uci.edu). Dr. Felgner has been focused on Department of Defense – funded research to develop a peptide-based vaccine for Q-fever caused by the obligate Rickettsia family bacteria Coxiella burnetti. He has trained 5 graduate students and 4 post-docs in the last 10 years. Sharon Jan who is TGE, is working on the C. burnetti project. As noted in the Background, Dr. Felgner has been working COVID-19, and submitted a P01 grant on vaccine development.
